The accounts demanded upfront payments, initially “5000 dirhams” (£400), and requested funds via a specific money transfer service. Critically, they failed to offer refunds if the crossing proved unsuccessful, highlighting a significant lack of transparency and ethical considerations within this operation. Videos depicted groups of young people swimming safely in the sea, despite numerous drownings, and falsely claimed successful journeys to mainland Europe for some migrants, despite the vast majority being returned to Morocco.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, acknowledged the situation and began removing content violating its policies, specifically those offering human smuggling services. However, the underlying issue highlighted the vulnerability of social media algorithms to manipulation and the potential for them to fuel real-world harm.
