The remarkable story centers around Rhossi, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, who was found critically ill on a Welsh beach and is now embarking on a 5,000-mile flight back to his natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico. THE DISCOVERY AND INITIAL RESCUE
In December 2023, Rhossi was discovered near Rhosneigr on Anglesey, Wales, by a dog named Meg during a walk with her owner. The young turtle was found in a “cold-stunned” state, a condition where sea turtles become disoriented and vulnerable due to exposure to significantly cooler waters than their typical warm-water habitats. Strong winds are believed to have contributed to his disorientation. Rhossi was less than two years old and was initially in a critical condition, prompting immediate action by conservationists.

CARE AND REHABILITATION AT ANGLESLEY SEA ZOO
For over two and a half years, staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo have diligently cared for Rhossi, nursing him back to health. During this time, he dramatically increased in size, growing from under 1kg (2.2lb) to a substantial 21kg (46lbs). Matt Davidson, the zoo’s curator, played a crucial role in coordinating the complex logistics of the rescue and transport, emphasizing the urgency of the mission. The zoo’s expertise and dedication were vital to Rhossi’s survival.

UNIQUE TRANSPORTATION STRATEGIES
The transport of Rhossi presented numerous challenges, requiring innovative solutions to ensure his well-being during the journey. Initially, he was transported by helicopter from Anglesey to London, followed by a cargo flight to Houston, Texas, USA. Maintaining a consistent temperature and preventing dehydration were paramount. To achieve this, a specially constructed, temperature-controlled crate was built, and meticulous care was taken to keep Rhossi’s shell and skin properly lubricated.

THE ROLE OF KY JELLY AND VASELINE
To prevent dehydration and protect Rhossi’s delicate skin and shell, conservationists utilized KY Jelly – a common sex lubricant – and Vaseline. The KY Jelly was applied to his eyes to lubricate them and prevent drying, while Vaseline was generously applied to his shell to prevent it from flaking off. This careful application was repeated before each stage of the journey, mirroring the care he received during his rehabilitation. The unusual necessity of explaining this process to chemists while purchasing supplies became a notable aspect of the operation.

A MOMENT OF EMOTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
Frankie Hobro, the owner of the Anglesey Sea Zoo, described the upcoming release as an “emotional experience,” acknowledging the deep bond that had formed between the staff and Rhossi during his care. She expressed the bittersweet realization that this journey signifies the end of his time with them, as he will return to the wild and they will no longer see him. The team’s two-year effort to care for him culminated in this final, critical step.

KEMP’S RIDLEY CONSERVATION
Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the rarest sea turtle species in the world, with their nesting sites restricted to only two beaches in Mexico and Texas, USA. Rhossi’s release back into the wild is viewed as a small but significant contribution to the survival of the species. FUTURE PLANS AND A RESCUE CENTER
Recognizing the ongoing need to protect cold-stunned sea turtles, the Anglesey Sea Zoo is currently planning to establish a dedicated turtle rescue center along the Welsh coast.
