NEW CARRY-ON RULES FOR JETSTAR
Jetstar will be introducing a new system for carry-on baggage, removing the 7kg weight limit starting in February 2027. Passengers will still be subject to size restrictions on their carry-on bags. This shift represents a significant change in the airline’s existing policies and aims to optimize space utilization within the aircraft.

UNDERNEATH THE BAG: A NEW FEE STRUCTURE
Base ticket fares will no longer include a carry-on bag. Passengers will be required to pay an additional fee to utilize the overhead locker for their carry-on luggage. Jetstar will discontinue routine use of cabin baggage scales, relying instead on customers to adhere to a maximum weight limit of 10kg for their carry-on bags to ensure safe manual lifting. This adjustment is designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce potential bottlenecks during boarding.

PRIORITY CARRY-ON: A PREMIUM OPTION
The “Priority Carry-on” fee, which covers the second, larger bag for the overhead locker, also includes priority boarding. The cost of this premium option will vary depending on the flight duration, with rates of $25 for flights from Launceston to Sydney, $33 for flights from Sydney to Melbourne, and starting at $52 for flights from Cairns to Tokyo. Jetstar acknowledges that these prices may fluctuate and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

GLOBAL TRENDS AND COMPETITOR MODELS
Jetstar’s decision to implement a size-based carry-on baggage model aligns with practices employed by other leading low-fare carriers worldwide. This approach reflects a broader industry trend aimed at maximizing revenue through ancillary fees, encouraging passengers to pay extra for services like baggage, preferred seating, cancellation rights, and meals. The airline’s recent financial results indicated a “continued strength in ancillary revenue,” although specific figures were not disclosed.

EU INFLUENCE: PASSENGER RIGHTS AND TRANSPARENCY
In January, the European Parliament passed a resolution granting passengers the right to take two pieces of carry-on baggage free of charge – a small case and the permitted underseat bag. This legislation prompted the European Council to mandate that airlines, booking platforms, and search engines must display fares inclusive of carry-on luggage upfront, facilitating easier price comparisons for consumers.

CUSTOMER-DRIVEN CHANGES: ADDRESSING FRUSTRATIONS
The change in Jetstar’s baggage allowance rules was driven by “extensive research and feedback from customers and crew who consistently identified having bags weighed at the gate and struggling to find room in overhead lockers as the more stressful parts of the airport experience.” The airline aimed to streamline the boarding process and reduce passenger stress by offering an underseat bag option alongside the ability to add Priority Carry-on.

CEO’S STATEMENT AND CUSTOMER CHOICE
CEO Stephanie Tully stated, “By giving customers an underseat bag with the option to add Priority Carry-on, we can make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time.” Jetstar’s new model offers customers greater choice, allowing them to pay only for what they need, with less travel equating to lower costs.

SIZE RESTRICTIONS AND INFANT EXEMPTIONS
Under the new rules, underseat bags can be up to 40 × 30 × 20cm, and overhead bags can be up to 56 × 36 × 23cm. Passengers traveling with an infant will be permitted to take an additional underseat bag for baby items, without incurring any extra charges. This provision aims to accommodate the specific needs of families traveling with young children.

CHECKED BAGGAGE REMAINS UNCHANGED
Jetstar’s checked baggage allowance remains unchanged, with a maximum weight of 40kg per passenger. Passengers can still purchase checked baggage services as needed, providing flexibility for those requiring additional luggage space.
