TELEGRAM FOUNDER CHARGED WITH FACILITATING TERRORISM
Russia has formally charged Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, with facilitating terrorism, stemming from accusations that the messaging app has been utilized for recruitment by Ukrainian intelligence services. The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia alleges that Telegram has been instrumental in planning and coordinating acts of sabotage and terror within Russian territory, failing to remove channels, chats, and bots actively supporting Ukrainian operations. Consequently, an international arrest warrant has been issued for Durov, who currently resides outside of Russia. This development follows Durov’s repeated assertions that the charges are a fabricated attempt by Russian authorities to restrict access to Telegram for Russian users. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Russia and Telegram, particularly concerning internet freedom and the platform’s usage within both Russia and Ukraine.

TELEGRAM’S ROLE AND DUPOV’S RESPONSE
Telegram, a globally utilized messaging application with approximately 950 million users, has faced significant scrutiny, particularly regarding its moderation practices. Despite previous criticisms, Telegram maintains it adheres to user privacy and lacks the aggressive policies of other major social media companies. However, in 2024, Durov was arrested and formally investigated in France over allegations of inadequate app moderation, specifically concerning the reduction of criminal activity.
