Seconds later, a second, even stronger 7.5-magnitude quake struck, centered close to the surface and causing significantly more destruction. Many people were feared dead, with countless others left homeless and traumatized, seeking shelter in streets after buildings collapsed. The timing of the earthquakes, coinciding with a national holiday, exacerbated the situation, with a higher concentration of people in homes than on a typical weekday. The earthquakes were shallow, with the first centered 20.3km below the surface and the second at a depth of 10km, contributing to the severity of the damage.

THE CREW: A RACE AGAINST TIME
Rescue efforts are underway, with teams racing against time to locate and extract survivors trapped under the rubble. Jorge Rodríguez, the president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, reported that 250 buildings had been damaged or destroyed, primarily in La Guaira, where BBC verified footage showed a 10-storey hotel reduced to rubble. Juan Ortiz, a medical student in Caracas, described the harrowing experience of witnessing a close friend die, another remain trapped, and approximately 20 people missing in the coastal area. His frustration stemmed from his inability to directly assist in the rescue.

The USGS reported that both earthquakes were shallow, with the first centered 20.3km below the surface and the second at a depth of 10km. The USGS estimated there was a 42% chance of more than 10,000 deaths and a 33% chance of more than 100,000 as a result of the earthquakes, based on a range of factors including previous, similar quakes and the size of the nearby population. These figures were issued to help the emergency response and are not an exact prediction. They were calculated based on previous earthquakes with similar characteristics, as well and other factors such as the size and depth of each quake. The disaster serves as the first test of Venezuela’s new relationship with the US since President Donald Trump ordered the capture of its President Nicolás Maduro in January. Trump said he had instructed his government “to get ready to move quickly”. “The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths,” he wrote on Truth Social.
