Preliminary election results on Monday confirmed a decisive victory for Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, setting the stage for a strengthened alignment with Western nations following years of tension with Moscow. The outcome reflects a broader shift in Armenia’s geopolitical outlook, driven by concerns regarding Russian influence and accusations of interference.

CIVIL CONTRACT’S DOMINANCE
The Civil Contract party secured 49.8% of the vote, significantly surpassing the StrongArmenia alliance, headed by Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, which garnered 23.3%. The election’s outcome is rooted in years of significant political upheaval, beginning with Pashinyan’s 2018 street revolution. Armenia continues to grapple with the consequences of the 2023 Azerbaijani military takeover of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, leading to the displacement of the Armenian population. Pashinyan has positioned the election as a critical choice between securing a lasting peace with Azerbaijan and risking a return to conflict.

Following the election, the Armenian Investigative Committee opened 59 criminal cases related to alleged electoral violations, including multiple voting, and detained nine individuals. Pashinyan vowed to “institutionalize peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan” and to “finally eradicate the criminal-oligarchic system from Armenia,” promising to hold those responsible for corruption and wrongdoing accountable.
