The stabbing of Shloime Rand, Moshe Shine, and the subsequent arrest of Essa Suleiman on Wednesday in Golders Green triggered the immediate escalation of the threat level. Police, led by Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, are investigating the attack and believe Suleiman may be linked to an earlier incident in south-east London. The Met’s counter-terrorism unit is reviewing all events across the country, acknowledging a gradual increase in the terrorist threat over time and focusing on ideologies including elevated threats to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions.

A significant portion of the heightened threat level stems from a sustained and escalating series of attacks targeting the UK Jewish community. Recent incidents include the murder of two Jewish people in October last year and the serious injury of three others in a car ramming and stabbing attack outside a synagogue in Manchester. Further attacks have occurred in March near Golders Green, involving the arson of Hatzola ambulances and the vandalism of synagogues. These attacks underscore the vulnerability of Jewish institutions and communities within the UK.
