This probe, announced on Tuesday, stems from initial findings in France in November, where consumer watchdog authorities uncovered childlike sex dolls on Shein’s website, raising significant concerns about their potential “paedophilic nature.” The investigation underscores a growing global concern regarding the oversight of online marketplaces and the potential for illicit content to proliferate undetected.

THE DIGITAL SERVICES ACT AND SHEIN’S RESPONSE
The Commission’s actions are rooted in the Digital Services Act (DSA), legislation adopted in 2022 aimed at safeguarding consumers and combating the spread of illegal goods and services across the European Union. The most recent request, submitted in late November, specifically demanded details regarding the sale of childlike sex dolls and weapons, alongside internal documentation outlining Shein’s methods for preventing minors from encountering age-inappropriate content and their strategies for preventing the circulation of illegal products. Shein has responded to the investigation with a statement indicating its commitment to cooperation, asserting that it shares the Commission’s objective of ensuring a safe and trusted online environment and will continue to engage constructively.

BROADER REGULATORY TRENDS AND INTERNATIONAL SCOPE
This investigation into Shein represents a broader trend among regulators and governments across Europe, the United States, and South Asia, who are increasingly scrutinizing major tech platforms over allegations of spreading AI-generated child sexual abuse material and other criminal content. Recent actions highlight the escalating urgency of this issue. Notably, French police recently raided the Paris offices of X and summoned its owner Elon Musk as part of a probe into allegations of biased algorithms, fraudulent data extraction, and pornographic imagery.
